Laser hair removal is priced per session and per treatment area, and almost nobody pays for one session. Listed prices in our data have a median of $100, though from only 6 providers, so the number that matters is your area multiplied by the number of sessions in the package — usually six to eight — plus maintenance.

Know the types

Three wavelengths cover almost all professional hair removal, and the difference between them is which skin they are safe on rather than which works better.

Alexandrite at 755 nanometres is strongly absorbed by melanin, so it is fast and effective on light skin with dark hair, and increasingly risky as skin tone deepens. Diode at 810 nanometres sits in the middle and is the workhorse of most clinics, handling a broad range of skin tones with contact cooling. Nd:YAG at 1064 nanometres penetrates deeper and is absorbed less by surface pigment, which makes it the safe choice for Fitzpatrick V and VI skin — a clinic treating dark skin without a YAG is a clinic to walk out of.

IPL is not a laser. It is broad-spectrum filtered light, scattered across wavelengths rather than focused on one. It can reduce hair, but it delivers less energy to the follicle per pass, tends to need more sessions, and is what most at-home devices use. Clinics that advertise laser and deliver IPL are not lying so much as blurring, and it is worth asking which device sits in the room.

Whichever device is used, the target is melanin in the follicle. That is why laser does very little on white, grey, true red or pale blonde hair, and why no reputable practitioner will promise permanent removal — the industry term is permanent reduction, and it is accurate.

What it costs

Listed prices in our sample have a median of $100, with the range running from $67 to $149.50. That sample covers just 6 providers, and it does not distinguish between an upper lip and a full pair of legs, so treat it as a rough order of magnitude rather than a benchmark for your own quote.

The structure of the bill matters more than any single figure. Almost every clinic sells packages rather than single sessions, because a single session does not produce a result. Most quote six to eight sessions for an area, spaced four to six weeks apart on the face and six to eight weeks apart on the body, timed to catch follicles in their active growth phase. Ask three questions before you pay: how many sessions the package includes, what a touch-up costs once the package is used, and whether the consultation and patch test are billed.

What changes your total

Area size is the biggest lever, and it is not linear — clinics bundle regions, so a package covering legs, bikini and underarms usually costs less than the three bought separately.

Hair colour and skin tone change how many sessions you need. Dark coarse hair on light skin responds fastest; fine or light hair may never clear fully at any number of sessions, which is a reason to decline treatment rather than to buy more of it. Hormonal drivers matter too: PCOS, thyroid disorders and some medications keep recruiting new follicles, so people with those conditions should expect maintenance sessions indefinitely and should budget for them from the start rather than treating them as failure.

Finally, count who is holding the device. A medical practice with a physician on site, a laser tech with hundreds of hours on your skin type, and a spa that bought a device last quarter are three different risk profiles at similar prices. Burns and pigment changes come from wrong settings, not wrong machines.

Aftercare

Expect redness and small raised bumps around each follicle for a few hours, sometimes up to two days. Cool compresses and a plain fragrance-free moisturiser handle it; ice directly on the skin does not help.

Stay out of the sun and off sunbeds for two weeks either side of every session, and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily on any exposed treated area. Tanned skin holds extra melanin at the surface, which is exactly what the laser is aiming at — this is the leading cause of burns and post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Skip hot showers, saunas, hot tubs and workouts for 24 to 48 hours, and leave retinoids, glycolic acid and exfoliating scrubs alone for about five days. Between sessions you may shave — shaving leaves the follicle intact — but do not wax, thread, pluck or use depilatory creams, because removing the follicle root leaves the laser nothing to target and wastes the session you already paid for.

From roughly day five to fourteen, treated hairs push out of the skin and shed. That looks like regrowth and is not; resist tweezing it and let it fall.
